Dairy Cattle Tail Docking ...

Dairy cow tails present a sanitary issue in milking barns and parlors.  To improve this situation, the practice of docking tails is growing.  Veterinarians and dairymen are using the Callicrate Bander to remove a portion of the tail.  The procedure is as follows:

  1. Always wear safety glasses.
  2. Tetanus toxoid must be used.  It is important to read and follow vaccine instructions.  For more information, contact your veterinarian.
  3. Insert the end of the loop with the clip (SEAM SIDE UP) into the nose of the bander.
  4. Insert the rubber washer on the end of the cord into the loop from the bottom.
  5. Hold the clip in place with your thumb and pull the loop forward to full size.
  6. Hang the loop on your thumb and fourth finger of your other hand.
  7. Straighten your fingers and flip your hand backward while pulling down on the bander.
  8. Position the rubber loop over a joint in the tail (4-10 inches below the vulva). Some stall barn operators like the shorter tail, while parlor barn operators prefer a longer tail.
  9. Ratchet until the tension peg moves firmly to the back of the slot. DO NOT rush while ratcheting.  The band will seat deeper if you go a little slower when tightening.
  10. Push the crimping lever down until it will go no further.
  11. Cut the loop as close to the SPOOL as possible, using the Callicrate Cutter.
  12. The tail may be surgically removed about one inch below the band within 3-4 days with no bleeding or it will eventually fall off.

“It goes on so much easier and quicker. You are saving so much time that it pays for the band. It’s really worked well for me. I just haven’t had any trouble. I think the tails swell up less, because it’s tighter. That alleviates stress on the animals.”
